WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jon Palmieri homered and drove in a career-high seven runs and Mike MacDougal struck out a career-high 12 batters to lead 15th-ranked Wake Forest to a 16-4 victory over visiting UNC Asheville on Monday afternoon at Hooks Stadium.
With the victory, Wake Forest improved to 34-13 on the season and improved its home record to 23-3. UNC Asheville fell to 19-37.
With the win, MacDougal (10-2) became the first pitcher in the ACC to reach the 10 victory plateau this season.
After struggling in the first inning when he allowed three runs, MacDougal settled down to allow just one run over the next five innings. He struck out 12 batters while surrendering just one walk and seven hits in the game.
Matt Briggs and David Bush combined to toss three scoreless innings to close out the game, while Wake Forest pitchers teamed to strike out 17 UNC Asheville batters.
UNCA starter Eddie Woods (4-11) took the loss after allowing seven runs on 11 hits in four innings of work.
The Bulldogs took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a pair of home runs from Willie Stewart and Josh White, but the Demon Deacons quickly tied the score at 3-3 in their half of the first. From there it was all Wake Forest, as the Demon Deacons outscored the Bulldogs 13-1 over the final eight innings.
Palmieri paced the Wake Forest offensive attack with four hits in six at bats, including a double and his 15th home run of the season. Andrew Riepe went 4-for-5 with five RBI while leadoff hitter Scott Daeley was a perfect 4-for-4 on the afternoon with a pair of walks. In all, the Wake Forest offense pounded out 19 hits with nine different Demon Deacons collecting at least one hit in the game.
For the Bulldogs, White and Stewart each finished with two hits in four at bats.
Wake Forest will return to action on Tuesday afternoon when the Demon Deacons host Old Dominion at 2 p.m. to close out the home schedule. UNC Asheville will play next in the Big South Tournament which begins on Thursday, May 20th.
