COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore righthander Scott Siemon pitched eight shutout innings and recorded his ACC-leading 11th victory of the season, leading Wake Forest (39-13, 16-7 ACC) to a 4-0 victory over Maryland (21-31-1, 6-17 ACC) in baseball action today at Shipley Field. The Deacons sweep the three-game series from the Terps after notching a 16-7 win Friday and a 9-4 win last night.
Siemon (11-2) surrendered six hits, walked four batters and tallied three strikeouts before he was relieved by sophomore lefthander Danny Borrell to start the ninth inning. With 11 victories, Siemon is now tied with teammate Mike MacDougall for the conference lead in wins. MacDougall got the win last night.
Junior Jamie Hammond (Greensboro, N.C.) pitched valiantly for the Terps, surrendering just three runs on five hits through seven innings and did not walk a batter, but still came away with the loss, evening his record at 4-4.
Senior catcher Andrew Riepe drove in the Deacons first run of the game on a double to center field in the second inning. In the sixth inning, with Wake Forest ahead 2-0 Riepe knocked in his second run of the game as his ground out to the shortstop scored scored senior first baseman Jon Palmieri.
The Terps tried to come back, but left five men on base in the final three innings, including two base runners in the ninth inning.
Freshman catcher Kevin McDonald (Rockaway, N.J.) led Maryland by going 3-for-3 at the plate. It marked the first three-hit performance of his career.
Maryland next faces Duke in the play-in game of the ACC Tournament in Durham, N.C. Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
