Track and Field Coach Wins Decathlon

NEW ORLEANS - Chris Huffins, a volunteer coach with the Wake Forest Track & Field program, won the U.S. National Championship in the decathlon last weekend at the U.S. Track & Field Championships in New Orleans, La.
Huffins, who is coached by Wake Forest assistant track coach Noel Ruebel, accumulated 8,694 points in the event and posted the highest mark in the world this year. In addition, Huffins moved ahead of Bruce Jenner, the 1976 Olympic champion, with the third highest total score in United States history.
Huffins demonstrated his ability as the quintessential athlete by winning four of the 10 individual events - the long jump, high jump, discus and 100-meters. Additionally, he posted the top marks in the world this season in the decathlon in the 100-meters (10.31), the high jump (7' 1 3/4") and the discus (174' 7").
Next up for the Huffins/Ruebel duo is the Goodwill Games which will take place in New York City on July 19-20.
