Seven Wake Forest Student-Athletes Named All-ACC Outdoor Track & Field Academic Team

Zach Facioni, Jack Pihlkar, Thomas Vanoppen and Andrew White earned honors on the men’s side while Anna Bush, Rachel Kern and Emma Soderstrom garnered honors on the women’s side.

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Seven Wake Forest Track & Field student-athletes were named to the All-ACC Outdoor Track & Field Academic Team, as announced by the conference on Friday.

Zach Facioni, Jack Pihlkar, Thomas Vanoppen and Andrew White earned honors on the men's side for the Demon Deacons while Anna Bush, Rachel Kern and Emma Soderstrom garnered honors on the women's side.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.

Men's Track & Field ACC Academic Team Honorees

  • Zach Facioni, Wake Forest, Sr., Economics

    • Earned All-American Honorable Mention by placing 11th at the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 5000m 

    • Grabbed a sixth place finish at the NCAA East Prelims to earn a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championship 

    • Secured a fifth place finish at the Virginia Challenge

  • Jack Pihlkar, Wake Forest, Sr., Accounting Analytics

    • Opened the outdoor campaign with a fourth place finish in the hammer throw, tossing a mark of 200' 3"/61.05m at the Bob Davidson Memorial (Mar. 18) 

    • Took ninth in the hammer throw at the Raleigh Relays (Mar. 24), tossing a mark of 196' 5"/59.88m 

    • Posted another top mark in the hammer throw, finishing eighth after recording a distance of 211' 5"/64.43m at the Duke Invite (Apr. 7), second-best mark in school history 

    • Earned All-ACC Second Team honors with his sixth place finish in the hammer throw 

    • Qualified for the NCAA East Prelims where he tossed a mark of 199' 7"/60.83m (May 25).

  • Thomas Vanoppen, Wake Forest, Gr., Liberal Studies

    • Started the season with a 17th place finish and new personal best in the 5000 at the Raleigh Relays with a time of 13:53.16

    • Picked up back-to-back wins at the Duke Invite and Virginia Challenge both in the 1500m event 

    • Made his impact on the program by winning the conference title in the men's 1500-meter,  winning the first outdoor ACC individual title since Robert Heppenstall won the 800-meter event in 2016 

    • He came-from-behind in the final straight away to claim the first Wake Forest student-athlete to claim the ACC title in the 1500-meter event since Nathan Sisco in 2001 

    • Continued his tremendous season by advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championship 1500-meter final, posting a 3:37.65 mark, breaking his previous school record of 3:38.34 

    • Placed fourth overall in the NCAA Outdoor Championship semifinal, earning his spot in the 1500-meter final 

    • Wrapped up an incredibly successful season, earning First Team All-America honors after finishing fourth in the 1500-meter final 

    • First Wake Forest outdoor All-American since Robert Heppenstall in 2018 and the first 1500-meter All-American since Kyle Graves in 2015, second 1500-meter All-American in school history.

  • Andrew White, Wake Forest, Sr., Politics & International Affairs

    • Claimed seven podium spots throughout the season 

    • Set a personal best in the discus throw at the ACC Outdoor Championship with a 58.22m time, earning All-ACC Second Team 

    • At the NCAA East Prelims he set a personal best in the hammer throw with a 63.03m toss, placing 24th 

Women's Track & Field ACC Academic Team Honorees

  • Anna Bush, Wake Forest, Sr., Psychology

    • Earned All-American Honorable Mention at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 18th and scoring 5,361 points 

    • Earned All-ACC First Team at the ACC Outdoor Championships, picking up a bronze medal and re-set her school record in the heptathlon (5,675 pts) 

    • Finished second at the Charlotte Invite in the 100m hurdles and third in the long jump 

    • Picked up a win at the VertKlasse Meeting in the 200m event

  • Rachel Kern, Wake Forest, Gr., Sustainability

    • Grabbed a first place finish in javelin at the Charlotte 49er Classic (3/17)

    • Earned a fifth place finish at the Raleigh Relays (3/25)

    • Grabbed third place finish at the Duke Invite (4/9)

    • Placed fifth in the javelin at the ACC Outdoor Championships (5/13), earning All-ACC Second Team

  • Emma Soderstrom, Wake Forest, Gr., Sustainability

    • Earned All-American Honorable Mention at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, placing 23rd with a 1.72m leap 

    • Earned All-ACC Second Team at the ACC Outdoor Championships, placing fourth with a 1.76m leap 

    • Picked up a win at the Duke Invite in high jump
