GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Freshman Marta Prieto overcame nagging back pains to become the fourth player in Wake Forest history to win the ACC Women's Golf Tournament on Sunday at the Grandover Course in Greensboro, NC. The Deacons finished second as a team in the tournament to Duke.
The native of Sevilla, Spain led the tournament from start to finish on the 6,015 yard and par 72 course. She opened the event with a round of even par 72. Prieto struggled on Saturday in the second round and posted a score of 76. Despite struggling, she started Sunday's final round with a three stroke advantage over Duke's Jenny Chuasiriporn and Wake's Alexandra Armas.
Prieto went out with a 36 on the front nine and came in with a 37 to close out the tournament with a 73. She finished the tournament with a three day total of 221, five-over-par.
With the championship, Prieto joins former Wake players Brenda Corrie-Kuhn, Stephanie Neill and Laura Philo in winning ACC medalist honors. Before Sunday, Philo was the last Wake player to win the title in 1995.
Chuasiriporn, the 1998 ACC Player of the Year, fired a 72 on Sunday and finished the event two strokes back of Prieto. Armas, a senior, ended the tournament in fourth place after posting a 76 in the final round and was six strokes back of the champion. Duke's Alicia Allison overtook Armas for third place with a 73 on Sunday.
Duke started the day in the lead as a team, seven strokes ahead of Dianne Dailey's Demon Deacons. The Blue Devils recorded a 297 on Sunday to maintain their lead and claim the team title for the third straight season. Despite a tournament best round of 294 by North Carolina, Wake Forest finished second. The Tar Heels were third followed by Florida State in the tournament's final standings.
Wake Forest junior Kristen Wagner finished ninth in the tournament for her second straight top-10 finish in the conference championship. Sophomores Kelly Kirwin and Kerri Murphy finished 15th and 19th respectively.
For their efforts Armas and Prieto earned All-ACC honors. It was Armas' third time making the team.
