LAWRENCE, Kan. - Junior Janelle Kraus led the Wake Forest women's cross country team to a 15th place finish on Monday morning at the 1998 NCAA Championships in Lawrence, Kan.
The Demon Deacons scored 388 points in the meet to place 15th among the 31 schools competing. That marked the third best finish in school history, trailing only a 10th place run in 1987 and a 12th place showing in 1994.
Villanova claimed the National Championship with 106 points in the meet, while Brigham Young (110), Stanford (111), Georgetown (199) and Wisconsin (233) rounded out the top five. Wake Forest was the top Atlantic Coast Conference school at the meet, placing ahead of North Carolina (18th) and NC State (19th) - the two schools that finished ahead of the Deacs at the ACC Championships earlier this month.
Kraus led the Demon Deacons to the finish line with a 52nd place run after clearing the 5,000 meter course in a time of 17:52.12 while senior Amy Wallace placed right behind Kraus in 53rd with a time 17:52.56. Junior Jill Snyder finished 97th (18:14), junior Emily Selvidio finished 123rd (18:28), sophomore Kelly Brady placed 169th (18:52) and sophomore Kathleen Kuhnert placed 220nd (19:29) for the Demon Deacons. Michigan senior Katie McGregor claimed the individual title with a time of 16:47.21.
