Women's Cross Country Runs Second at NCAA Regionals

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Junior Janelle Kraus led the Wake Forest women's cross country team to a second place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional in Greenville, SC, on Saturday morning. With the runner-up finish, the Demon Deacons automatically qualify for the NCAA National Championships in two weeks in Lawrence, KS.
Kraus finished first in the meet after clearing the 5,000 meter course in a time of 17:04, 19 seconds ahead of second place finisher Maria-Elene Calle of Virginia Commonwealth. The win was the fifth individual title of the season for Kraus, who also captured the ACC Championship two weeks ago. As a team, the Demon Deacons scored 73 points in the meet to place second behind team champion NC State (47 points) in a field of 29 teams. Wake Forest qualifies for the NCAA National meet for the second consecutive season after finishing second to NC State in the 1997 regional meet as well. Senior Amy Wallace placed 10th with a time of 17:46 for the Demon Deacons. She was followed by junior Jill Snyder (14th), senior Becky Pollock (20th) and junior Emily Selvidio (32nd).
On the men's side, the Demon Deacons finished 12th among 21 teams with a total of 349 points and failed to qualify for the NCAA National Championships. James Madison (50 points) and NC State (73) finished first and second to qualify for the national meet. Sophomore Stephan Pro was Wake Forest's top finisher in 26th place after clearing the 8,000 meter course in a time of 31:05.
