WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest women's golf team received its seventh straight bid to NCAA postseason play today, as the Demon Deacons were one of 19 teams selected to the 1999 NCAA Women's Golf East Regional Championship.
The regional tournament will be held May 6-8 at The University Club in Blythwood, S.C., with the University of South Carolina serving as the host school. The 5,996-yard, par-72 course is four years old and serves as home to the Lady Gamecock men's and women's golf teams.
The East Regional is comprised of 19 teams from the following three districts: South (8), Midwest (4), and Mid-Atlantic (7). Wake Forest, currently ranked No. 30 in the nation, was the third-seeded team in the Mid-Atlantic District, behind only top-ranked Duke and No. 11 Tennessee. In addition, seven players from teams not selected to the regional received individual bids. The top eight teams and two individuals not from those squads will advance to the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on May 19-22.
Wake Forest has received an NCAA Regional bid every year since 1993, advancing to the NCAA Championships in each season except 1998. The Deacons' top finish was a third-place showing at the 1995 NCAA Championships in Wilmington, N.C.
