Women's Tennis Advances at ACC Indoors

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Wake Forest's Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL) advanced to the semifinals of the 1999 ACC Women's Indoor Tennis Championships being held on the University of North Carolina campus this afternoon. Verban defeated Paige Boiko of Virginia in three sets. Verban is the number one seed in the tournament an is ranked tenth as a singles player in the nation. After dropping the first set, 5-7, Verban easily defeated Boiko in the next two sets, 6-1 and 6-2. Verban will now face third seeded Megan Miller of Duke in a semifinal match on Sunday.
In doubles' competition, the Deacon freshmen duo of Janet Bergman (Fayetteville, NC) and Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ) advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating UVA's Boiko and Stacy Gingold, 8-5. The next opponent for Bergman and Haus will be NC State's team of Brooke Siebel and Ioana Plesu.
Both matches are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday morning, Jan. 24.
