KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced the pairings for the 1999 Women's Tennis Championships this afternoon and Wake Forest will take on Virginia Tech in the First Round on May 15 in Columbia, SC. This is the Deacons' sixth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament.
"I'm happy with the draw," said head coach Brian Fleishman. "We can't overlook Virginia Tech. They came to our tournament in the fall, so we're familiar with them."
Also in the region are Furman and the host institution, South Carolina. The Deacons defeated Furman, 8-1, and lost to the Lady Gamecocks, 5-4 earlier this season.
"Right now are goal is to beat Virginia Tech," said Fleishman. "If you look too far ahead, sometimes it'll come back to haunt you."
Wake Forest is 2-5 all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The Deacons defeated Virginia in 1994 and Brigham Young in 1998.
The Deacs are 12-2 all-time versus Virginia Tech. The teams last met during the 1996 season in a match that Wake won by a final score of 9-0.
The time for the first round match-up between the Deacons and Hokies has not been announced.
