Cross Country Teams Fare Well in Season Debut

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest men's and women's cross country teams opened the 1998 season on Saturday with each team performing well in their respective meets.
The women's squad competed at the Appalachian State Invitational and finished in first place among the five teams competing. The squad was led by All-American junior Janelle Kraus, who claimed the individual title after clearing the 5,000 meter course in 17:44. The Demon Deacons finished the race with three runners among the top five and six in the top 10.
Junior Emily Selvidio placed third with a time of 18:14, while senior Amy Wallace (18:31) finished fifth and junior Jill Snyder (18:38) placed sixth. Rounding out the top performances for Wake Forest were junior Alison Anibaldi (18:53) in ninth place and senior Becky Pollock (18:54) in tenth place.
The men's team competed at the UNC Charlotte Cross Country Dual Meet, which used a team relay format as five schools battled head to head. Wake Forest finished the event in second place with a 3-1 record, defeating North Carolina, Radford and Wofford while falling only to UNC Charlotte.
The duo of sophomore Stephan Pro and freshman Philip Wiles was Wake's most successful relay team on the day, completing the 12 mile course in a time of 1:01.05 to finish in fourth place. The team of senior Joe DeGutis and freshman Sean Nagorny finished in fifth place individually with a time of 1:01.27.
