NORCROSS, Ga. -- The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its 1999 men's and women's tennis flight champions and runners-up today. Wake Forest freshman Janet Bergman and junior Annemarie Milton won women's singles titles, while the doubles team of Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz won their second consecutive men's No. 1 doubles championship.
Bergman, ranked 35th by the ITA, posted a record of 7-1 to claim the No. 2 singles championship. After beginning the season at the No. 4 flight, she was quickly elevated to No. 2 following the sixth match of the season. She recorded 14 wins to only two losses overall this season at the No. 2 flight. Bergman is only the second player in school history to win the ACC No. 2 flight title.
Milton became the fourth Deacon to win the No. 5 flight championship. Like Bergman, she also completed the conference season with a record of 7-1. Milton played the entire 1999 season at No. 5, tallying a 25-14 record. She is one of five Deacons to have over 20 wins on the season.
Clouston and Munoz won the No. 1 doubles title for a second straight year, with a record of 7-1. Ranked eighth in the latest ITA doubles rankings, the duo won their first seven ACC matches before falling in their final regular season match of the season, 8-9 (3), to Virginia. They currently have a record of 27-7, one win short of tying their own school record for wins in a season.
The Deacons also won several runners-up awards. Sophomore Mariel Verban is the runner-up at No. 2 singles, Maren Haus is co-runner-up at No. 3 singles, while the men's doubles team of Andres Guzman and Johan Hansen are runners-up at No. 3 doubles.
The Wake Forest men's team will battle Virginia and the women's squad will take on Clemson in the quarterfinals of the 1999 ACC Tournament on Friday, April 23. The tournament is being held at the Racquet Club of the South in Norcross, Ga.
