The Wake Forest men's cross country team is one of 46 NCAA division I schools to possess a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or better. That distinction helped the Deacons earn team all-academic recognition from the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association.
The all-academic team selections were ratified by the U.S. Cross Country Coaches Association following nominations by coaches and certification by appropriate university personnel. Nominated teams were required to average at least a 3.00 cumulative grade point average for all team members who used a season of eligibility.
Coach John Goodridge's team of 16 runners posted a grade point average of 3.01. The Deacons were led by David Hampson (Exeter, NH) who owns a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.
On the cross country course in 1997, Wake Forest finished second in the ACC Championships and narrowly missed making the NCAA Championships as a team when they finished third at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championships.
