BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State volleyball team suffered a three games to none defeat tonight versus Wake Forest at Varsity Gym. The Mountaineers trailed 8-0 before getting on the board in the first game and never recovered.
Sophomore outside hitter Karen Nielson (Mt. Pleasant, SC/First Baptist) recorded a game-high 14 kills to lead the Mountaineers. Junior setter Tiffany White (Hendersonville, NC/West Hendersonville) posted 27 assists in the losing effort.
Wake Forest was led by Trina Maso de Moya and Corie Miles who each posted 13 kills. Maso de Mayo also recorded 11 digs and two service aces for the Demon Deacons. Wake Forest setter Julie Cowley registered a game-high 37 assists in the winning effort.
With the loss, Appalachian State (1-5) earned a split for the weekend. The Mountaineers garnered their first win of the season last night in five games over Georgia Southern. The victory ups Wake Forest's record to 10-2.
Appalachian returns to Southern Conference action Tuesday night, when it travels to Western Carolina for a 7:00 p.m. contest. Wake Forest also gets back to league play Tuesday night, it is slated to face Clemson at 6:00 p.m., in Reynolds Gym.
