GREENVILLE, S.C. - The Wake Forest women's cross country team won the Pre-Regional Meet hosted by Furman University Saturday morning. The Demon Deacons finished first of 32 teams at the site of the Nov. 11 NCAA Regional Championships. Wake Forest ran away with the title, beating the runner-up by 57 points.

"We feel real good," said Wake Forest head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. "Our spread between our top five was real close. We ran a real good race and did well together. This is the regional course that we?ll have to do well at next month to qualify for the NCAA Championships, so we wanted to come down here and scope it out. We wanted to beat some teams in the South and Southeast Regions and we pretty much slammed them, so hopefully that will get us some respect and added confidence going into the ACC Championships."

Sara Day was the first collegian to cross the finish line, taking second place overall with a time of 17:34 on the 5,000 Meter course. The senior from Winston-Salem, N.C., has led Wake Forest in all four races that she has run in this year.

Risa Rutland, Kathleen Kuhert, Courtney Lancashire and Becca Veenstra all finished eight seconds within each other taking 9th, 10th, 12th and 13th places for the Deacs respectively.
