WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest volleyball team stopped the Blue Devils cold in their tracks on Halloween night, as the Deacons topped Duke 3-0 (16-14, 15-8, 15-9) in Reynolds Gym.
Game one was a see-saw battle, with both teams taking the lead on numerous occasions. The Deacons came out strong, forging a 3-0 lead early in the match. The Devils came back, however, to take a 7-5 advantage. The teams continued to swap leads, but Duke backed Wake Forest into a corner when blocks by Dorrette Burwell and Krista Dill put the Blue Devils ahead 14-12 for game point. The Deacons would go on to score the next four points behind the strong play of outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya. The junior collected two kills and a block assist as Wake took the first game 16-14.
Duke jumped out to an early lead in the second game, but the Deacs fought back to take an 11-5 advantage - their largest lead of the match to that point. The Devils pulled to within three points of host Wake, but gave up consecutive kills to drop their second game of the match, 15-8.
Neither team could gain a decisive advantage in game three, as the Deacons squandered a 4-1 lead at the beginning of the game. Dill registered a kill to bring the Blue Devils to a 4-4 tie with the Deacs. Wake scored the next five points to take a 9-4 lead - a lead they would not relinquish. Duke again tied the game at nine apiece, but six straight points by the Deacons sealed the 3-0 win.
"This was a great win for us, since Duke is one of those teams that surrounds us in the conference standings," head coach Valorie Baker said. "It is just one more notch that we're able to make heading into the ACC Tournament."
Maso de Moya led the Deacon attack with 20 kills and 24 digs. Both figures proved to be match-highs. Middle blockers Jessica Hood and Margaret Davidson each earned 12 kills, while freshman Sara Beth DeLisle added 11 kills for the Wake Forest offense. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips topped the box score with 41 assists, while freshman Ashley Fisher tied a career-high with 11 digs.
Outside hitter Ashley Harris led Duke with 14 kills, while setter Pamela Gottfred registered a team-high 36 assists. Junior outside hitter Bryn Gallagher led the charge of the Devil defense with 10 digs.
The Deacons improve to 17-7 overall and 8-5 in conference play, while Duke drops to 16-11, 5-8. Wake Forest hits the road again with a match at Florida State November 3, but returns back to Reynolds Gym November 10 and 11 for matches with Virginia and Maryland.
