WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team came back from two games down to post a 3-2 (11-15, 5-15, 15-5, 15-4, 16-14) win over Virginia Friday evening at Reynolds Gym. The victory assures Wake Forest of a third-place regular-season finish in the ACC. Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya set a single-match record with 31 kills in the five games, including a 10-kill first game. Virginia middle blocker Deanna Zwarich also topped a school record, breaking the UVA career record for kills.
The Cavaliers swept the Deacons in the first two games, after falling behind 4-1 to the Deacs. Wake came back to tie the game at 10-10 before Virginia scored three unanswered points to pull ahead 13-10. The deficit was too great and the Cavs held on for the 15-11 win. Virginia dominated Wake in the second game, giving up an early 8-2 lead to the visitors. Virginia closed out the game with a 4-1 run and took a commanding 2-0 advantage at the break.
Wake Forest began the third game with a vengeance, streaking out to a 13-2 lead before giving up two points to Virginia. A solo block by senior middle blocker Jessica Hood gave the Deacs the push they needed to wrap up their first game of the match 15-5. Wake Forest took the momentum it gained from the third game and utilized it in the fourth, scoring eight unanswered points after three consecutive Virginia points. A kill by senior middle blocker Corie Miles all but sealed the equalizing game for the Deacs.
The fifth and rally-scored game was hotly contested, with each team gaining a share of the lead. Virginia's Katie Jones knocked the ball into the net, giving Wake Forest a 6-4 advantage early in the game. Wake took a three-point lead on several occasions and had the opportunity to win the match at 13-10. Virginia scored four straight points to take match-point at 14-13. Consecutive kills by freshman Sara Beth DeLisle and Maso de Moya put the Deacs ahead 15-14. Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips preserved the win for Wake Forest with a solo block to end the match.
"After the first two games, we knew our backs were to the wall, but it came down to placement in the (ACC) tournament. We knew that by beating this team, it would seal our third-place position and give us the confidence we need," head coach Valorie Baker said. "Sara Beth (DeLisle) had an outstanding dig and kill for us in the fifth game to help us get that victory."
The Deacons improve to 18-8 overall and 9-6 in conference play. Wake Forest will play its final regular-season match against ACC foe Maryland at home on Saturday, November 11 at 7:00 pm. It marks the final home match for three Wake Forest seniors, Jessica Hood, Corie Miles and Heather Wilkie.
