Wake Forest Harriers Advance To NCAA Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The NCAA announced the recipients of at-large bids to the NCAA Cross Country Championships Monday afternoon and both Wake Forest teams received bids. The Demon Deacons will compete for the national championship, Monday, Nov. 20 at the Iowa State Cross Country Course in Ames, Iowa.
Both the women?s and men?s teams have gained momentum in the postseason, placing third and fourth respectively at the ACC Championships Oct. 28 and third and fourth respectively at the NCAA Regional Championships Nov. 11. Sara Day and Ted DeVos have earned all-ACC honors and Day, Kathleen Kuhnert, Risa Rutland, Garick Hill and Chris Estwanik each earned all-regional honors.
The Wake Forest women?s team will be making its first appearance at the NCAA Championships since 1998, where it finished 15th. The Demon Deacon women have been to the NCAA Championships five times, with their highest finish being 12th in 1994. The men?s squad will be making its first appearance at the NCAA Championships since 1996, where they took 11th place. The Demon Deacon men have been to the NCAA Championships seven times, with their highest finish being 3rd in 1989.
Wake Forest has produced 10 All-Americans in cross country. The most recent Demon Deacon to earn the honor was Janelle Kraus in 1999. She finished her career last year as a two-time cross country All-American. Kraus is currently on the Demon Deacon coaching staff as a student assistant coach. The last All-American off the men?s squad was Jon Russell in 1996.
