Winston-Salem, NC - Wake Forest women's basketball player Janae Whiteside (Charlotte, NC) will miss the 2000-01 season after sustaining major damage to her right knee during an exhibition game last Friday night.
The senior guard, who was projected to be a starter this season for the Deacons, was diagnosed with a dislocated patella after going down less than four minutes into the game against Dyanamo Kiev. An MRI also revealed a partial tear to the ACL as well as damage to the other knee ligaments. Whiteside will be required to undergo surgery to repair the ACL damage. A date for the surgery will be determined later.
"It is a big loss," said head coach Charlene Curtis. "Janae was a player who was very focused and committed to doing what she could to help this program turn the corner. We have a tight-knit senior class and they feel at a loss right now. But, Janae's teammates know what they need to do to make up for her offensive contributions on the court."
Whiteside was Wake Forest's leading scorer in the team's first exhibition game on November 4, scoring 22 points with an 8-of-10 performance from the field, including four three-pointers. Over the past three seasons she averaged 4.4 points per game, and connected on 30 percent of her shots from three-point range. She ranks sixth all-time at Wake Forest with 68 career three-pointers.
