College Park, MD - The third-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team wrapped up its ACC season with a 3-1 loss to Maryland in the second round of the ACC Tournament in College Park, MD Friday afternoon.

The Deacs, now 16-3, 3-1 on the season, dropped an ACC Tournament game to Maryland for the second consecutive season. Wake Forest fell behind early, allowing a 3-0 lead by the host Terrapins.

The Terps scored the first goal of the game at the 20:40 mark, as Dana Rizzo took a rebound and shot it past Deacon goalkeeper Jaime Tressler. Rachel Hiskins shot the ball into the circle to Rizzo, who was stopped by Tressler on the initial shot opportunity. Less than three minutes later, Wake Forest gave up a second goal to the fourth-ranked Maryland squad. Caroline Walter slid the ball into the cage from 10 yards out to put Maryland up 2-0.

The Deacons entered the second half with a 2-0 deficit, but were unable to stop the Maryland attack. The Terps scored their third goal at the 26:11 mark, as Keli Smith took a cross from Carla Tagliente and shot it in between Tressler's legs.

Wake attempted a comeback with just under four minutes remaining in the game with a score by freshman forward Katie Ackerman. Ackerman took a rebounded ball and put it past Maryland goalkeeper Ashley Hohnstine for the final 3-1 margin.

"It marks the end of the ACC for us and onward to the NCAAs. Thank goodness we have that so that this is not our last performance of the season," said head coach Jen Averill. "Maryland played a brilliant game of hockey and really limited us in our ability to possess the ball and get a flow going through the first and second half. We had some individual moments throughout the game where we showed promise, but we were definitely outperformed today by Maryland."

The Deacons will now await selection to the NCAA Tournament on November 7.
