WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The fourth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team advanced to the NCAA semifinals for the first time in school history with a 3-2 overtime win over Michigan Sunday afternoon at Kentner Stadium.

Michigan appeared to be the team that would advance in the early stages of the game. The Wolverines took a 1-0 lead heading into the second half and added another goal with 25 minutes remaining in the game. Wake Forest fought back to score two goals within three minutes to tie the game at 2-2. The Deacs played strong after freshman forward Kelly Doton scored the first of her two goals at the 21-minute mark. Wake Forest allowed the Michigan attack to cross midfield only twice in the last 21 minutes of regulation. The Deacons struck quickly in the first overtime period, earning a penalty stroke on stick interference inside the circle. Senior forward Jenny Everett popped the ball into the top left of the cage for the game-winner.

Freshman forward April Fronzoni scored the only goal in the first half, slipping the ball past Wake Forest goalkeeper Jaime Tressler on a rebound shot. The Wolverines held that lead until junior forward Jessie Veith scored her second goal of the tournament following a penalty corner attempt. Michigan's Jessica Rose crossed the ball to Veith inside the circle for the Wolverines' second goal of the game.

Wake Forest was on its heels until Kelly Doton scored the first of her two goals on a deflection in front of the goal. The goal was a controversial one, as Michigan head coach Marcia Pankratz earned a green card following the goal. The goal was indeed counted and, just three minutes later, Doton netted the ball off a pass from Jenny Everett for the equalizing score. The Deacs played an aggressive defense and held off the Michigan attack for the remaining 21 minutes. Less than 30 seconds into the first overtime, a stick interference on a Wake Forest shot attempt garnered a Demon Deacon penalty stroke. Stroking goalie Molly Maloney entered the game for Michigan, but was only able to brush the ball as Jenny Everett sailed it high into the left corner of the net for the 3-2 win.

"I thought that tactically, we were playing a solid game. Michigan was able to take advantage of some opportunities," said Wake Forest head coach Jennifer Averill. "We were never going to back down and it wasn't worrisome to me after they got the second goal. (Kelly) Doton's first goal was clutch. There were just a lot of great plays by us throughout the game."

Wake Forest, which improves to 18-3 overall, will face top-ranked Old Dominion next Friday at Foreman Field in Norfolk, VA. Game time is yet to be determined. Michigan concludes its season with a 18-4 overall mark.
