Three different Deacons recorded a goal against the Hawkeyes.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 7 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 11 Iowa in an overtime battle to start the 2026 season, 4-3 on Friday evening at Kentner Stadium.

The Deacs earned a penalty stroke after a penalty corner just five minutes into play. Senior Ava Moore helped get the Deacs on the board first.

Freshman Bianca Rees-Gibbs added her first goal as a Deacon to give Wake the early lead.

Senior Rory Heslin added one for the Deacs after recording the only Wake goal in the second quarter.

How It Happened

Wake Forest took a 1-0 advantage in the first five minutes of the contest.
- Senior Ava Moore recorded a penalty goal
The Demon Deacons continued the punch with a great individual run by freshman Bianca Rees-Gibbs
- Rees-Gibbs passed the ball to the middle, off of a defender, got the ball right back to herself and scored.
Six minutes into the second quarter, senior Rory Heslin recorded the third goal for the Deacons, assisted by freshman Sela Provenzano.
The Deacons took a 3-0 lead into the half.
The Hawkeyes took over in the second half scoring two goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth to tie the Deacs and send the game to overtime.
Six minutes into overtime, Iowa scored the game winning goal
The Hawkeyes held on for a 4-3 victory.

The Deacs are back in action for the second game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge as they take on Michigan Sunday, August 30 at 2 p.m.
