Winston-Salem, NC -
The Wake Forest women's tennis team continues to roll, as three Deacon singles players have advanced to the third round in the ITA Southeast Regional Indoor Qualifying Championships, taking place at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center this weekend. Meanwhile, in doubles, a Deacon tandem upended the top-seeded team to advance to Sunday's semifinal match.
In Saturday's second round singles action, junior Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC) breezed through another match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory over UNC's Kendrick Bunn. Bergman, the top seed in the 64-member bracket, has lost only four games through two matches thus far. Wake Forest senior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, NC), the 10th seed, also won easily in straight sets, topping Julie Penn of Louisville, 6-1, 6-3. Junior Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ), the ninth seed, also defeated a Cardinal opponent, winning 6-2, 6-1 over Katie McLaughlin.
In third round action on Sunday, Bergman faces 16th seed Carolina Mayorga of Kentucky, Houston plays third-seeded Carmina Giraldo of Clemson, and Haus meets eighth-seeded Brooke Skeen of Kentucky.
The Wake Forest doubles team of Bergman and freshman Aimee Smith (Norcross, GA), playing in a tournament together for the first time this season, stunned top-seeded and 11th-ranked Carolina Mayorga and Sarah Witten of Kentucky, 8-6, in Saturday's third-round. The momentum continued for the Deacon duo, seeded ninth in the bracket, as they went on to top Carmina Giraldo/Anna Savitskaya of Clemson, 8-2 in the quarterfinals. The tandem will face third-seeded Amanda Johnson/Megan Miller of Duke in Sunday's semifinal.
The Southeast Regional qualifier is one of eight taking place across the country this weekend. Finalists in both the singles and doubles brackets advance to the Rolex National Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas in February.
Tournament action continues Sunday morning with third-round singles matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. The Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center is open to all spectators for the event, and admission is free.
