Wake Forest Finishes 11th At Mercedes Championships

PONTE VEDRA, Fla. - The Wake Forest men's golf team shot a 9-over 297 in the final round of play to finish in 11th place out of 15 teams at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championships. The tournament was contested on the 6,895 yard, par-72 course at Sawgrass Country Club.
The Deacs moved up one place in the final round as they surpassed Mississippi State University today who led Wake Forest by 11 strokes going into the final round of play, but shot a disappointing 27-over par, 315. The Deacons were 37 strokes behind team champion, University of Florida, who also carded a 9-over 297 to win the team title by five strokes.
The top finishers for Wake Forest were Jay Morgan and Buck Williams, both of whom tied for 29th place in the individual standings at 9-over par. Morgan shot 71 in the final round, while Williams carded a 78. Both players finished 14 strokes behind individual champion, North Florida's David Bennett, who defeated Florida's Camilo Benedetti in a playoff after they were deadlocked at 5-under after 54 holes of play.
Chris Yoder shot a 76 today and tied for 45th place at 14-over, while Brent Wanner recorded a 75 to finish tied for 50th at 15-over. Chad Wilfong also shot a 75 on the final 18 holes, finishing tied for 67th at 23-over par.
The Deacs are next in action at the Puerto Rico Classic (formerly the San Juan Shoot-Out) held at Rio Mar Country Club in Rio Mar, Puerto Rico, on February 27-29.
