Wake Finishes Tied For 6th At Cleveland Championships

AIKEN, S.C. - The Wake Forest men's golf team shot an 8-over 292 in the final round of play to finish in a tie with Kansas University for 6th place out of 15 teams at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship. The tournament was contested on the 6,380 yard, par-71 course at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, South Carolina.

With a 54-hole score of 871, or 19-over par, the Demon Deacons were 22 strokes behind the team champion Augusta State, who carded a 3-under 849 for the tournament to win the team title by 13 strokes over closest contender University of Virginia.

The top finisher for Wake Forest was freshman Brent Wanner who tied for fourth place in the individual standings at 3-under par. Wanner was tied for first place after the first two rounds but shot a 2-over, 73 today to finish 3 strokes behind individual champion, Virginia's Mike Mitchell, who fired a 2-under 69 today and finished at 6-under par for the tournament.

Freshman Buck Williams shot an even par, 71 today to finish in a tie for 26th place at 6-over par, while freshmen Cortland Lowe carded a 74 to finish tied for 38th at 9-over par. Sophomore Jay Morgan and freshman Chad Wilfong also recorded 74's today to finish in ties for 42nd (+10) and 47th (+11) respectively.

The young Deacon team is next in action at the Cleveland Golf-Augusta State Invitational, held at Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, GA, on April 1-2.
