Wake Forest Falls To Virginia's Last Inning Heroics

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia pitcher Tim LaVigne hit a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead the Virginia Cavaliers to a 10-9 victory over the 22nd-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons at the UVA Baseball Field on Saturday.
LaVigne (2-0) pitched the final two innings, giving up no runs on just one hit to pick up the victory for the Cavaliers. David Bush (1-1) pitched two innings, giving up two runs on four hits in taking the loss for the Deacons.
Wake Forest jumped on top with six runs in the first inning. Virginia came back to cut the lead in half with three runs in the bottom of the first. The Cavaliers scored another run in the second inning to make the score 6-4. Wake made it 7-4 with a run in the third and increased that lead to 9-4 with two more runs in the fifth. Virginia scored four runs in the seventh and two in the ninth on LaVigne's single to take the 10-9 victory.
For Wake, Carlos Brackley went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Ricky Mendez went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Jon Benick went 2-for-4 with three RBI to lead the Cavaliers at the plate.
With the loss, the Deacs drop to 19-9 overall and 4-4 in the ACC. Virginia improves to 13-13-1 overall and 2-3 in conference play. The same two teams will meet again on Sunday. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
