MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The Wake Forest Demon Deacons scored 13 runs and pounded out 20 hits to defeat the Minnesota Golden Gophers by a score of 13-6 in the finale of the 2000 Hormel Foods Baseball Classic on Sunday at the Metrodome. Both teams finished the Hormel Classic with a record of 2-1.
After two scoreless innings to start the game, Wake Forest got to Minnesota starter Ben Birk for five runs in the top of the third inning. Wake Forest's Corey Slavik hit a two-run triple to right center field scoring Danny Borrell and Jason Aquilante. The next batter, catcher Dan Conway, homered to left center field and the Demon Deacons would add another run in the inning to jump to a 5-0 lead. Wake Forest would add single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to hold a 7-4 lead after their half of the seventh.
But Minnesota would cut the Wake Forest lead to 7-6 with two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning after freshman pinch hitter Scott Welch doubled to left center field scoring Luke Appert and Jason Kennedy. But the Demon Deacons added two runs in the top of the eighth and four runs in the top of the ninth to put Minnesota away.
Slavik was the hitting star of the day for Wake Forest going 3-for-5 with six RBIs and three runs scored. Catcher Dan Conway went 3-for-6 with four RBIs and shortstop Chase Voshell was 4-for-5. Starting pitcher Danny Borrell went 5.2 innings scattering eight hits and four runs to earn his first win of the season. Borrell also went 2-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI from the plate. Eight of Wake Forest's 20 hits on the day went for extra bases while the teams combined to leave 24 runners on base.
Minnesota will travel to Wichita State next weekend for a three-game series with the Shockers.
