Deacs Drop Pitcher’s Duel at High Point
3/31/2026 8:46:00 PM | Baseball
Sophomore right-hander Duncan Marsten retired the first 13 batters he faced as he finished with six strikeouts while allowing one run in 6.1 innings pitched.
HIGH POINT, N.C. – Despite getting the tying run 90 feet away in the top of the ninth inning, the Wake Forest baseball team (20-9, 6-6 ACC) dropped a tightly contested pitcher's duel to High Point (19-9, 7-2 Big South), 1-0, on Tuesday evening at Williard Stadium.
Sophomore starting pitcher Duncan Marsten delivered a strong outing on the mound for the Demon Deacons, tossing six strikeouts while allowing one run in 6.1 innings. The Lake Balboa, Calif., native was dominant early, retiring the first 13 batters he faced.
Junior center fielder Javar Williams led the Deacs offensively, recording a pair of singles in the sixth and eighth innings.
Sophomore first baseman Luke Costello tallied his 10th extra-base hit of the season on a double in the fourth. Meanwhile, fellow sophomore Dalton Wentz roped a double down the left field line in the top of the ninth.
HOW IT HAPPENED
FROM COACH WALTER
"That is two games in a row that we have wasted a really good start. I thought Duncan [Marsten] was fantastic today. We should have found a way to get that win for him. We needed to have better at-bats. We had two opportunities to advance on balls in the dirt that we didn't take. That could have been the difference in pushing a run or two across. When you are not playing well like we are right now, you have to do the little things right, and we haven't done that. We had two misses in the air today. On a different day where the ball isn't blowing straight in, we could have probably hit seven or eight homers. Today, we saw that those balls were not getting out and we needed to be able to get inside the baseball and have a little bit better of an approach. We need to find a way to win tomorrow in Charlotte." - Head Coach Tom Walter
