DURHAM, N.C. -- Wake Forest took advantage of 14 hits in defeating Duke 12-3 Saturday at Jack Coombs Field. The victory improves Wake Forest 7-4 in the ACC and 23-9-1 overall while Duke drops to 2-6 in the ACC and 11-23 overall.
The Demon Deacons scored four runs in the second inning to go up 4-0. Two consecutive singles from Dan Conway and Corey Slavik and a Carlos Brackley walk loaded the bases for Wake Forest. A passed ball scored Conway, Jamie Athas' RBI single to rightfield scored Slavik, Stephen Sullivan's RBI groundout scored Brackley and Cory Sullivan's RBI single scored Athas.
Wake Forest added two more runs in the fourth inning on a Jason Aquilante RBI single and a Duke error to go up 6-0 before the Blue Devils got on the scoreboard.
Eric Schmitt (4-0) earned the victory on the mound for Wake Forest. He threw 6 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and one run (one ER).
Duke scored a run in the fourth on a solo home run by Jeff Becker and added two more on a two-RBI double from Jeff Becker.
Duke starter Ryan Caradonna (3-5) took the loss after allowing seven hits and six runs (five earned) in 4.0 innings. Caradonna struck out four batters.
The Blue Devils were led by Becker's 3-5, three RBI performance. J.D. Alleva also finished with two hits (2-4).
Wake Forest was led by Carlos Brackley's 2-3, four run, two RBI day. Jamie Athas went 4-5 with three runs and an RBI, Cory Sullivan, Dan Conway and Corey Slavik each totaled two hits apiece.
Game three of the three-game series is tomorrow at Jack Coombs Field at 1 p.m.
