WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Catcher Cliff Godwin (4-0) went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Jeremy Schumaker pitched seven innings, giving up only three runs and striking out three batters to lead the 21st-ranked East Carolina Pirates to a 5-3 win over the 10th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Hooks Stadium on Wednesday.
For Wake Forest, Brad Comer (2-2) pitched 2/3 of an inning, surrendering four runs on three hits to take the loss for Wake Forest. In addition to Schumaker's win, relief pitcher Cory Scott pitched the final two innings to pick up his NCAA-leading 18th save of the season.
After ECU grabbed an early 1-0 lead, Wake came back to take the lead with a run in the third and another in the fourth to make the score 2-1. The Pirates answered, however, with four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good at 5-2. The Deacs added a run in the bottom of the fifth to close out the scoring and make the final 5-3.
Center fielder Cory Sullivan led Wake Forest at the plate, going 2-for-4 on the day. Behind Godwin, Chad Tracy went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Pirates to the victory.
With the loss, Wake drops to 32-12-1 on the season, while East Carolina improves to 33-10 with the win. The Deacons will be back in action on Friday when they host the Maryland Terrapins in the first game of a three-game ACC series. The first pitch for Friday's game at Hooks Stadium is set for 2 p.m.
