MALIBU, Calif. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team needed only five singles matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2000 NCAA Women's Tennis Championships in Malibu, CA this weekend. The Deacons did not lose a set in today's match play, defeating Tennessee 5-0, and will play the winner of the California-Vanderbilt match Friday afternoon at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PST).
Freshman Adria Engel, ranked sixth in the nation, defeated Tennessee's Alison Ojeda 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Engel gave away one game in the first set before stringing together four straight games to seal the set. No. 21 Bea Bielik took second singles, giving up only four games in the match. She allowed Tennessee's Agnes Wiski to win four games in the first set, but the freshman shut out Wiski in the second to take the victory.
Wake's Janet Bergman also won her match in straight sets, taking a 6-3, 6-2 win over Volunteer Vilmarie Castellvi at No. 3 singles. Castellvi pulled to within 3-2 of Bergman in the second, but Bergman took the last three games to wrap up the match and, subsequently, the Deacon win. Maren Haus, at No. 4 singles, and Jackie Houston, at No. 5, each won their matches, as well. Haus took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Tennessee's Meiling Parks, while Houston defeated Candy Reid 6-2, 6-2. Senior Annemarie Milton was ahead of Crystal Cleveland 7-6, 3-1 before the match was called.
"We played Tennessee early this season, and we played pretty well in that match. They're a scrappy team, just like all the other teams in the SEC, and we didn't want to overlook them," head coach Brian Fleishman said." "We match up well with them. All six of our singles players played well at the same time, something which we haven't done all year."
Wake, now 24-2 on the season, is set to play the California-Vanderbilt winner Friday afternoon at 8 p.m. (5 p.m. PST) at the Ralphs Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine University.
