SUNRIVER, OR. - The Wake Forest women's golf team wrapped up competition at the 2000 NCAA Women's Golf Championships in Sunriver, OR, finishing 17th out of a field of 24 with a four-round team score of 1,228. The Deacons shot a 311 on today's 18, the team's highest of the tournament, and finished 12 strokes out of the top 10.
Junior Marta Prieto placed third overall with a four-round 292 after shooting a two-over 74 in today's round. That finish marks the highest ever in the NCAA event for a Wake Forest individual. "This tournament showed what a true competitor Marta is. She hit the ball so well all week long, and she just looked like she wanted to win," said head coach Dianne Dailey. Marta adjusted her game for the winds -- something most of the other players couldn't do."
Freshman Maria Beautell completed her run at her first NCAA Championships by finishing in a tie for 29th place with a four-round 302. Katie Brenny, a sophomore, shot an 80 in the final two rounds to finish in a tie for 105th. She shot a four-round 320. Freshman Nuria Clau shot a 321 through 72 holes to tie for 107th. Kelly Kirwin, a senior competing in her final round, shot an 83 in today's round. That mark proved to be the highest of the tournament for Kirwin, who finished in 113th place with a four-round 325.
"We could have played better, but we just didn't finish well. The back nine gave up problems every day.," said Dailey. "The wind was really chilling, and it was raining off and on. I thought we'd take advantage of the bad conditions, but we weren't able to do it."
The University of Arizona took team honors, winning the tournament with a team score of 1,175. The Wildcats finished 21 strokes ahead of runner up Stanford. Jenna Daniels earned individual medalist honors, shooting a one-under 287 through 72 holes. Julia Kraschinski placed second with a 290, two strokes ahead of Prieto.
Wake's 17th place finish is the lowest finish in the NCAA's under Dailey, who led the Deacons to a third-place in the 1995 championships. Laura Philo, who placed sixth in the 1995 event, previously held the top individual finish in the NCAA's for a Wake Forest golfer before Prieto's third-place finish this year.
