WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest University women's cross country team will get its season underway on Friday, Sept. 1 at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C. The event, hosted by Appalachian State, will also feature South Florida, UNC Asheville, Florida State, Davidson, Winthrop, UNC Greensboro, South Carolina, Navy as well as the Demon Deacon women's team.

Head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett begins her second season at the helm of the Wake Forest women's cross country and track & field teams. Last season the Demon Deacons finished fourth at the ACC Championships and fifth at NCAA Regionals. Janelle Kraus, who won the Moutaineer Open last year, earned All-ACC honors and was named All-American in her final season at Wake. Leading the Deacs this season will be seniors Sara Day and Kathleen Kuhnert.

"Sara (Day) is coming off a real strong spring track season were she set personal bests in three different events," Bennett said. ?I am eager to see her insert herself as one of the best in the conference. Kathleen (Kuhnert) is a senior and a team captain who has work really hard. She is a critical part of the scoring team."

The 5,000 meter race will start at 5:45 p.m. on a new course at the State Farm Fields. For directions, log on to www.asutrackandfield.com.

The Demon Deacons will return home to host the Wake Forest Invitational Saturday morning, Sept. 9 at Water Tower Field.
