BOONE, N.C. -- The Wake Forest University women's cross country team opened its season Friday evening with a second place finish at the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C. The Demon Deacons racked up 72 points, beating eight schools and finishing just behind the champions, South Florida.

Denise Hefferin led the Deacs, placing sixth in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:35.00. Hefferin, who hails from St. Charles, Ill., was one of the three freshmen who finished first, second and third for Wake Forest. Becca Veenstra took 12th, running the Appalachian State course in 18:43.10 and Nicole Kalogeropoulos finished 17th at 19:03.40.

"We had three freshman be our top runners,? said Wake Forest head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett. ?We're real pleased with that. We did not run everybody today. We held out about half the team. This group that ran today were the ones who had not raced in a while. We kept the ones who had been racing in the summer on the side along with the ones who still need more training.?

Junior Lauren May and seniors Kathleen Kunhert and Erin Haugh placed 18th through 20th. Adralyn Wendel and Britton Stackhouse rounded out the Demon Deacon squad, taking 32nd and 42nd out of the 106 participants.

The Demon Deacon cross country teams will return home to host North Carolina in a duel race Saturday morning, Sept. 9 at Water Tower Field on the campus of Wake Forest. It will be the season opener for the men's squad.
