Wake Forest Too Much For Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Wake Forest University women's soccer team picked up another road win, defeating Charlotte 2-1, Tuesday evening at Transamerica Field. Each time had five shots in the first half with no goals, but the Demon Deacons put it to the 49ers in the second half, firing 16 shots to Charlotte's 3.
Joline Charlton broke the scoreless tie 10 minutes into the second half when she chipped in a ball from Liz McDowell. Charlton, a sophomore from Stone Mountain, Ga., is tied for the team's lead with three goals on the season. Charlotte threatened, placing all three second half shots on frame. The first was saved by Wake Forest goalkeeper Tracy Chao, the second was saved by midfielder Sarah Kate Noftsinger, who was credited with a back save after heading out a near goal by the 49ers. The Deacs couldn't stop the third shot on goal, taken by Charlotte's Jill Hayes, a rocket into the upper right corner of the net, knotting the score at one apiece with 11 minutes remaining in the match.
The Demon Deacons fought back and within four minutes they had sealed the game with a second and final goal. Jennifer Howell, the 49ers goalkeeper deflected a shot on goal taken by Wake Forest freshman midfielder Katherine Winstead, leaving the ball resting a few feet from the vacant goal, which Demon Deacon senior midfielder Rachael Lewis gladly tapped in for the game winner.
Charlotte falls to 3-4 with the loss. No. 14 Wake Forest improves to 4-1 on the season. The Demon Deacons return to action this weekend when they return home to host the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational at Spry Stadium. Festivities will begin Friday, Sept. 15 at 5:00 p.m. when Virginia Tech and Missouri will face off, followed by No. 14 Wake Forest and No. 25 California. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, Sept. 17 when the Tigers and Bears will play before the Demon Deacons host the Hokies.
