WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The University of Wake Forest women's soccer team, ranked 14th in the nation was upset 2-1 at home by No. 25 California Friday night in the first day of the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational at Spry Stadium. In the first game Missouri topped West Virginia 2-1.
"With a field player in goal we're going to have to put our chances away or we're never going to win," said Wake Forest head coach Tony da Luz. "We gave a great effort and played hard. If we put out that amount of effort from here on out we'll be alright."
California capitalized on an errant goal kick 22 minutes into the match to take a 1-0 lead. Kyla Sabo scored the goal for the Golden Bears unassisted. The Demon Deacons struck back six minutes later when junior forward Emily Taggart found Joline Charlton streaking up the middle. Charlton scored, tying the game 1-1 and becoming the first to score on the Bears all season.
Tied through halftime, Tami Pivnick hit the game-winning goal for Cal-Berkeley at the 58:28 mark blasting a free kick from 25 yards out to hot to handle for Wake Forest goalkeeper Tracy Chao.
Wake Forest turned the pressure up as the game clock wound down, but California's defense withstood the assault as the Deacs outshot the Bears 10-6 in the second half.
In the first game of the tournament Virginia Tech jumped out to a 1-0 lead 14 minutes into the match when Kathy Holdsworth canned a shot from 16 yards out. The Hokies kept the lead throughout the half, but could not hold off Missouri in the second period. Missouri's Steph Brennan bounced a shot off a Virginia Tech defender into the goal to knot the score 1-1 and then at the 56 minute mark Suzy Probst bounced a shot off the Hokie's goalkeeper and Amy Timmermann retired the ball into the net for the Tiger's game-winning goal.
Missouri improves to 4-3, California improves to 6-0, Virginia Tech falls to 3-6 and Wake Forest falls to 4-2 on the year. The Wake Forest/Nike Invitational will conclude Sunday, Sept. 17 with California and Missouri squaring off at 11:30 a.m., followed by Wake Forest versus Virginia Tech at 2:00 p.m. at Spry Stadium.
