Deacon Volleyball Drops First Match Of 2000

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - The Wake Forest volleyball squad dropped its first match of the year with a 3-2 loss at the hands of the eighth-ranked Pepperdine Waves in the University of Florida Invitational Friday evening. With the loss, the Deacs fall to 7-1 overall.
The Deacons opened the match strongly, taking a 15-10 win over the Waves, but dropped the second game 15-5. Wake came back in game three to edge Pepperdine 15-13, but the Waves held the Deacons to 16 points in the final two games to pull out the win.
Junior outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya proved to be a force in the Wake Forest attack in games one and three. She totaled five kills and four digs in the opening game. But in the third game, she tied a Wake Forest individual single game record with 10 kills.
Maso de Moya led Wake with a season-best 25 kills. Junior middle blocker Margaret Davidson added 12 kills, while sophomore Amanda Tiller registered 11 kills in the five games. Davidson highlighted the Deacon defense as well, leading the way with six total blocks.
Sophomore setter Ashlee Phillips had a career night, recording career-highs in assists (52) and digs (15). Maso de Moya and senior middle blocker Corie Miles each had 14 digs for Wake Forest. Tiller chipped in with 13 digs in the match.
Pepperdine had five starters with double-figure kills. Jennifer Fopma led the Wave attack with 16 kills. Kate Taylor and Stacy Rouwenhorst each had 13, while Melissa Snow and Melissa Plass both killed 10 balls. Plass also recorded 45 assists, while Taylor blocked a match-high nine balls for the Wave defense.
Wake continues in the University of Florida Invite and will take on Florida Atlantic on Saturday at 5:00 pm.
