PIKESVILLE, Md. -- The Wake Forest women's tennis team has three players competing in the T. Rowe Price National Intercollegiate Clay Court Championships, the first leg of the collegiate Grand Slam. All three Deacs are competing in the singles bracket, and Wake Forest has one team competing in doubles.
As play opens Thursday, the women will compete in two rounds of the singles and one round of doubles. The tournament is taking place at the Suburban Club of Baltimore County.
Sophomore Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, NY), ranked 14th nationally, is seeded third in the women's bracket and will face Virginia Commonwealth's Martina Nedelkova in her first-round match. Bielik defeated Nedelkova last weekend to win the William & Mary Invitational singles title. Wake junior Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC), ranked 31st nationally, meets Courtney Perkins of Portland in her first-round match.
While Bergman and Bielik were automatically accepted into the main draw, Wake Forest junior Maren Haus (Brielle, NJ) has already won three qualifying matches over the last two days to enter the main draw. She will face Bianca Posada of Tulsa in Thursday's first round.
The duo of Bergman /Bielik will also compete in doubles, taking on qualifiers Julie DeRoo/Mira Radu of Mississippi in the first round. The Wake Forest tandem, ranked fifth nationally and seeded second in this weekend's bracket, brought home the Flight A doubles title from the William & Mary Invitational last weekend.
