WINSTON-SALEM -- Before the Wake Forest and North Carolina football teams square off Saturday evening on the gridiron, the Demon Deacon and Tar Heel Cross Country squads will race each other Saturday morning. The Wake Forest Invitational begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 9 at Water Tower Field, on the campus of Wake Forest University. The women will run a 5,000 meter course and the men will take the 8,000 meter route. Although the Invitational has turned into more of a duel race between North Carolina and Wake Forest, it is the only chance to see the Deacs at home this season.

The men's squad opens its season with this Saturday's race. Head coach Gary Sievers is in his first year at the helm of the Demon Deacon program. Michael Altieri, who led last year's team that finished 3rd in the ACC and tied for 5th at NCAA Regionals, returns this season as a junior.

The women are coming off a second place finish at the Mountaineer Open, Friday, Sept. 1 in Boone, N.C. A trio of freshmen led the Deacs in the ten-team field. Denise Hefferin was the top finisher for Wake, taking sixth place overall with a time of 18:35.00. Head coach Annie Schweitzer Bennett and the Demon Deacons have their work cut out for them on Saturday with the Tar Heels coming to town. North Carolina's women's squad is ranked 14th in the nation.
