WINSTON-SALEM, NC - After the second day of action concluded Saturday at the ACC Men's Tennis Indoor Championships, four singles players remain. Three of them are from Duke and Wake Forest's Raul Munoz is the other. On the doubles side, two Demon Deacon duos remain in the round of eight.
Munoz battled past North Carolina's David Cheatwood 7-6 (3), 7-5, and then trumped his teammate, David Bere, 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals. He will face the fourth-seeded Joel Spicher from Duke at 10 a.m. Sunday. Bere stomped Clemson's Kevin Gottfried 6-1, 6-1 before falling to Munoz.
David Loewenthal and Mike Murray both lost in singles play Saturday morning. Loewenthal couldn't stop the top-seeded Andrews Pedroso from Duke, falling 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Virginia's Michael Duqette was too much for Murray, winning 6-3, 6-3.
Murray picked up a win in doubles action with his partner, Justin Kaufmann. They blasted Georgia Tech's Aguire and Moros 8-2 to advance to the third round, where the Wake Forest tandem will face Gojanovic and Knight from Clemson Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Andrew Simpson and Rick Phillip also picked up a Wake Forest victory in doubles, knocking out Navinkov and Tagger of Georgia Tech 8-3. They will play the top-seeded pair from Duke, Smith and Yani at 1:00 p.m. Sunday.
The 2001 ACC Men's Tennis Indoor Championships will continue Sunday, January 21 and conclude Monday, January 22. All matches are played at the Wake Forest University Indoor Tennis Center and admission is free.
