WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Play began Thursday in the Omni Hotels Southeast Region Championships, taking place in the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center. Ninety-six singles players and 64 doubles teams, representing 28 different schools and four different states (North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee) are competing for the right to advance to the National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in Dallas, Texas from Nov. 8-11.
Fourteen of the singles competitors and seven doubles teams competing in this weekend's event are currently ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Rankings.
Thursday's action included two rounds of qualifying for the singles draw, followed by the first round of doubles play. In singles, five of the eight seeded players earned a spot in the main draw by winning both of their qualifying rounds. Included in those qualifiers were Demon Deacon sophomores Liz Proctor and Aimee Smith. Other qualifiers included Shannon Stafford of Kentucky, Median Barjrambasic of Coastal Carolina, Katrina Gildemeister of NC State, Natalie The of Furman, Brooke Cordell of Tennessee and Kendall Cline of North Carolina.
The field was narrowed from 64 to 32 in Thursday's doubles action. The Wake Forest tandem of Proctor and senior Maren Haus won their first round match by an 8-3 score over Amanda Eutzler and Carlin Kannan of UNC Greensboro. Another Deacon duo of Smith and freshman Katie Martzolf, seeded 16th in the bracket, defeated Tennessee Tech's Anita Obando and Luciana Tamburini, 8-4. Wake Forest's Janet Bergman and Bea Bielik, seeded first in the doubles bracket and ranked No. 2 nationally, received a first-round bye and will play their second round match on Friday afternoon.
Friday's action begins at 8:00 with first-round singles play, with the second round of doubles beginning at 2:00 p.m. A schedule of the Wake Forest players' match times is listed below. All matches take place at the WFU Indoor Tennis Center and admission is free.
