Men's Tennis Has Two Singles And One Doubles Advance

CHAPEL HILL, NC - Two Wake Forest men's tennis players won two singles matches to advance to the Round of 16 at the ITA Region II Championships Friday and a Demon Deacon doubles team picked up a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals. After winning three straight matches yesterday to qualify for the main draw, David Loewenthal and Trent Brendon earned two more wins today to advance to the quarterfinals of the doubles draw. Loewenthal and David Bere both advanced to the Round of 16 in the singles draw after earning two victories Friday.
Bere, a junior from Midland, MI, topped Chad Winebarger from Davidson 6-0, 7-5 in the Round of 64 and then fought off 11th seeded Daniel Casquero of Virginia Commonwealth 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the Round of 32. He will face fifth seeded Roger Anderson from Georgia Tech Saturday morning in the Round of 16.
Loewenthal, the 10th seeded sophomore from Franklin Lakes, NJ, stopped Coatal Carolina's Arnaud Gaffin 6-4, 6-1 in the Round of 64 and then beat North Carolina's Trystan Meniane 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 32. He will take on Sagi Zakim from the College of Charleston in the Round of 16 Saturday morning. In doubles action, Loewenthal and his partner, Trent Brendon topped American's Tushar Garg and Andreas Kulscar 8-5 in the Round of 32 and then beat the Tar Heel tandem of Andy Metzler and Marcio Petrone 8-2 in the Round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals, where they will face the top seeded team from Georgia Tech, Roger Anderson and David Wright.
Brendon won his first round singles matchup with Erez Cohen from Appalachian State 6-3, 7-5, but then lost 6-0, 5-7, 6-4 to Georgia Tech's Joao Menano in the Round of 32.
Derrick Spice won his main draw singles opener 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 over 13th seeded Tony Mule from UNC-Greensboro, but then fell 6-2, 6-0 in the Round of 32 to Charlotte's Ola Jonsson. In doubles action, Spice and his partner Mike Murray lost 8-4 to Peter Shults and Jason Zimmerman from Duke in the first round of the Main Draw. Murray, the seventh seeded player in the singles draw, was upset in his first round match 6-2, 6-3 by North Carolina's Geoff Boyd.
Andrew Simpson couldn't stop Florida State's Romain Jurd in the first round of the Singles Main Draw, losing 6-2, 6-3.
