Men's Tennis Suffers Setback In Opener

BLACKSBURG, VA - The Wake Forest men's tennis team opened up its dual schedule Sunday afternoon at Virginia Tech's Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. The 43rd ranked Demon Deacons were upset 4-3 by the No. 61 Hokies.
Virginia Tech captured the doubles point with a pair of victories in the first and third matches as the Demon Deacon duo of Trent Brendon and David Loewenthal lost 8-4 in the first match and the Hokie tandem of Andreas Laulund and Stephane Rod battled past Wake Forest's David Bere and Justin Kaufmann 9-8 (3). Mike Murray and Derrick Spice did beat Virginia Tech's team of Davor Dupljack and Michael Kurz 8-4 in the second doubles match.
Wake Forest took three out of the six singles matches as Brendon won 6-4, 7-6 (5) over Kurz in the No. 5 match, Bere beat Laulund 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-4 in the No. 3 match and Loewenthal took out Saber 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 1 match. Spice lost 7-6 (6), 6-4 to Huot in the No. 2 match, Murray fell 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 to Dupljak in the No. 4 match and Kaufmann could not hold off Rod in the No. 6 match, falling 7-6 (3), 7-6 (3).
The Demon Deacons, 0-1 on the season, will return to action Saturday, Feb. 9, when they travel to Williamsburg, VA, to take on William & Mary.
