CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Wake Forest volleyball handed Virginia its seventh loss of the season, defeating the Cavaliers in three games (30-28, 30-21, 30-20) Friday evening at University Hall. The Demon Deacons improve to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the ACC with the win, while the Cavaliers fall to 5-7 overall and 1-4 ACC.
In the first game, Virginia led 17-16, but Wake tied the game at 17-17. Wake scored the next point to take the lead for good, before eventually winning 30-28. The Demon Deacons jumped out to an early lead in the second game, but the Cavaliers came back to take a 9-8 advantage. Wake tied the game at 9-9 and grabbed the lead to win 30-21. In the third and final game, the Demon Deacons opened a commanding 18-9 lead, but the Cavaliers trimmed the advantage to 19-15. They could not get any closer as Wake posted a 30-20 win to earn the 3-0 victory.
Senior Margaret Davidson led the Demon Deacons with 11 kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Senior Trina Maso de Moya had 10 kills and four digs of her own. Junior setter Ashlee Phillips notched 39 assists and 13 digs for the only double-double of the match. She also had seven kills, two service aces and hit an impressive .583 for Wake. Sophomore Katy de Roeck game off the bench to provide key serves and a 1.000 hitting percentage.
Head coach Valorie Baker is pleased with her team's performance and feels tonight's win will give the Deacons confidence to defeat the Terrapins tomorrow.
"Ashlee Phillips played a great game overall. She led the team in hitting percentage as a setter. Her strategic placement of the ball was crucial for our victory," said Baker. "Katy de Roeck did a nice job with serving tonight. She came and led the team to a strong finish."
"Obviously a win gives us confidence to go into Maryland, a team who has been playing strong in the ACC. This win helped give us the poise to compete competitively tomorrow and come away with a win," Baker said.
Wake Forest takes on 7-6 Maryland tomorrow at 5 p.m. in College Park.
