Rocky Face, Ga. - The Wake Forest men's golf team turned in an nine-over 297 as a team on Sunday, good enough to hold on to a third-place finish at the Carpet Capital Collegiate, held at The Farm's par 72, 6,906-yard course. The Demon Deacons finished with a 54-hole total of eight-over 872, four strokes behind second place Tennessee, and 10 strokes ahead of fourth-place Clemson. Host Georgia Tech won the event, leading the 15-team field wire-to-wire with a six-under 858.
Wake Forest senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) posted the Deacs' best finish, tying for fifth place individually with a one-under 214. Morgan carded a one-under 71 on Sunday to go with his earlier scores of 70 and 73, and finished four strokes back of individual champion D.J. Trahan of Clemson. With a one-over 73 in the final round, sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) moved up three spots to tie for 11th place overall with a one-over 217 (72-72-73).
Junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) recorded his second-straight top 20 finish, tying for 20th place with a seven-over 223 (75-71-77). Wilfong placed 19th in the Deacons' last outing, The Ping Preview.
After shooting a 68 on Saturday, Deacon junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) struggled in final round, turning in an 81. Wanner finished 27th overall with a eight-over 224 (75-68-81).
Deacon junior Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) rounded out the Wake Forest lineup, finishing 30th with a nine-over 225 (74-75-76).
Georgia Tech and Wake Forest were the only teams to place all five members of their lineup in the top 30. WFU finished in the top three as a team for the second straight event and has had an individual place in the top five in all three tournaments so far this season.
Wake Forest returns to action Oct. 15-16, when it competes in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate in Birmingham, Ala.
