FARMERS BRANCH, Texas - Wake Forest junior Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.) picked up a semifinal win in women's singles but lost in the doubles final with teammate Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) at the Omni Hotels National Intercollegiate Indoor Tennis Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club.
Beilik hammered out 10 aces in her 6-3, 6-1 semifinal win over Duke's Kelly McCain today. The match lasted just 50 minutes and sends Bielik into her second national collegiate singles final (she won the 2000 ITA National Clay Court final). She'll face sixth-seeded Stanford senior Lauren Kalvaria in Sunday's noon final. Kalvaria beat Bielik in last May's NCAA semifinals.
In Saturday's doubles final, Bielik and Bergman fell to Stanford's Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra 8-4. Stanford jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the final and needed just 40 minutes to claim the title. The national final appearance in doubles was the second for Bergman and Bielik, who also won the 2000 ITA National Clay Court title. They fall to 14-2 this season with the loss.
Bielik, a two-time ITA All-American, is now 6-1 in singles this season and has notched four top-50 wins this week en route to the singles final. She was ranked No. 1 in the preseason ITA national singles rankings and is the No. 3 seed this week.
