Chapel Hill, N.C. - Four Wake Forest field hockey players were named to the All-ACC squad last night at the annual league banquet. Deacon senior midfielder Jemima Cameron was also named ACC Co-Player of the Year.
This year marked Cameron's third All-ACC selection. In her three seasons at Wake Forest, she has piled up 93 points and her 35 goals are good for fourth all-time at Wake. This season, she is second on the team in goals (8), assists (6) and points (22). Cameron is a two-time NFHCA Regional All-American and last year was named and NFHCA National All-American. She shares Co-Player of the Year honors in 2001 with Maryland's Autumn Welsh.
Making her second All-ACC team in 2001 was Wake Forest junior forward Heather Aughinbaugh. Aughinbaugh leads the Deacons in goals (9) and in assists (7) for 25 points. Last season, she was named an NFHCA Regional All-American and this season, she has recorded at least one point in 11 of the Deacons' 16 games.
Sophomore forward/midfielder Kelly Doton was named to her first All-ACC squad. Doton's 22 points place her in a tie for second on the team and her nine goals tie her with Aughinbaugh for the team lead. Since coming to Wake, Doton has started all 38 of the team's games. She has three multi-goal games this year.
Junior midfielder Maria Whitehead was also named to her first All-ACC squad this season. Her six assists are good for second on the team, but her speed and playmaking ability are what landed Whitehead on the All-ACC team. Last season, Whitehead was named to the All-ACC Tournament team.
The Deacons begin their quest for the ACC Championship today at 4 p.m. when they take on the host North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round of the ACC Tournament. The winner will take on the winner of the Maryland-Virginia game on Sunday at 1 p.m. to determine the conference champion.
