WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Three Duke players scored in double figures, led by sophomore Sheana Mosch's game-high 22, as the fourth-ranked Duke Blue Devils held off Wake Forest, 66-58, in ACC action Thursday evening at Joel Coliseum. With the win, Duke improves its record to 21-1, 9-1 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons drop to 11-10 with a 3-7 conference mark.
Duke's victory halted a five-game home winning streak for Wake Forest, and Thursday's contest was the fifth straight ACC game for the Deacons that has been decided by 10 points or less. The Deacs have posted a 2-3 record over those five games.
After the two teams tied it up early in the game at 14 points apiece, Duke went on a 16-6 run to take a 10-point lead with seven minutes remaining in the half. The Deacons chipped away at the deficit, cutting it to three, 36-33, as Wake sophomore Tiffani Listenbee (Clinton Township, Mich.) scored an old-fashioned three-point play with two seconds remaining before the break.
The game was tight at the start of the second half, as Wake Forest cut the Duke lead to 44-42 at the 14:09 mark. The Deacons then suffered a five-and-a-half minute scoring drought as Duke scored eight straight points to go up 52-42 before Wake Forest freshman Eafton Hill (Boone, N.C.) hit a three-pointer at the 8:42 mark. The Blue Devils led by five, 63-58, with 1:52 remaining, but Wake Forest missed their final four shots of the game and Duke converted on 3-of-5 free throws to hang on for the 66-58 victory.
Duke's Mosch scored 22 on 8-of-12 shooting, while Blue Devil freshman Iciss Tillis recorded a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Senior Georgia Schweitzer added 16 points and a game-high seven assists to the Duke effort.
Wake's Hill scored 13 points and blocked three shots, while Listenbee contributed nine points and pulled down a career-high nine rebounds. Senior Olivia Dardy (Norwalk, Conn.) scored 11 points and grabbed eight boards.
Wake Forest returns to action on Sunday, when it travels to North Carolina to take on the Tar Heels in a 2:00 p.m. tipoff.
