The Fighting Illini women's tennis team, ranked 33rd nationally, capitalized on Wake Forest's misfortune
to gain their first ever victory over a top ten opponent. The eighth-ranked Demon Deacons were playing without the #1 singles
player in the nation Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who was sidelined with an illness. This forced Wake to forfeit two
matches, which allowed the Illini to begin with an early advantage. With the lead, the Illini never looked backed and cruised to a
5-2 victory at Atkins Tennis Center.
At No. 1 singles, Illinois freshman Jennifer McGaffigan defeated #6 Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) in a three set thriller, 6-3,
3-6, 7-6(6). The Deacons recorded two singles victories at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, as 56th-ranked Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.)
topped Eldina Fazlic, 4-6, 6-7, 7-6(5) at No. 2 and Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, N.C.) defeated Simone Kung in straight
sets, 6-3, 6-4. Haus and freshman Aimee Smith (Norcross, Ga.) also posted a win at No. 1 doubles, but Illinois took the
doubles point with a win at No. 2 and a walkover at No. 3.
Wake Forest falls to 2-2 on the season, and returns to action this week when it travels to Madison, Wisc. to compete in the
National Team Indoor Championships. Competition begins on Thursday, February 15.
