Women's Tennis Drops Two At Indoors

MADISON, Wisc. - The Wake Forest women's tennis team has dropped its first two matches at the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships, held at the University of Wisconsin this week. The 14th-ranked Demon Deacons were shut out by No. 9 Southern Cal in Thursday's opening round, then was edged by 21st-ranked Wisconsin, 4-3, in the consolation bracket on Friday. The losses drop Wake Forest's record to 2-4 on the season.
On Thursday, Wake Forest captured a win at No. 1 doubles, where the fourth-ranked duo of Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, N.C.) and Bea Bielik (Valley Stream, N.Y.), won 8-5 over USC's top duo, Tiffany Brymer and Jewel Peterson, ranked 16th nationally. It was, however, the Deacons' only victory of the day, as the Trojans took Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the point, and won at Nos. 1, 3, 4, and 5 singles for the 5-0 shutout. Bielik's 6-2, 6-4 loss at No. 1 singles, to 31st-ranked Peterson, was her first loss of the year.
Wake Forest fared a little better versus the Huskies on Friday, winning three matches at Nos. 3, 4, and 5 singles, all in straight sets although dropping the overall match, 4-3. Junior Maren Haus (Brielle, N.J.), ranked 73rd nationally, won at No. 3 over 75th-ranked Darija Klaic, 6-1, 6-3. Senior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, N.C.) captured a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 4 over Ilona Kordonskaya, while freshman Elizabeth Proctor (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) soundly defeated her first ranked opponent in collegiate competition, topping No. 66 Erin Hoe, 6-0, 6-1.
Wake Forest will continue in the consolation bracket of the National Team Indoor Championships, facing host Wisconsin on Saturday.
